When the dust settled on Qualcomm Stadium’s rugby fields last Saturday morning, 16 dachshunds were wagging their tails as they had their tickets punched for the San Diego regional finals of the 2010 Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals. The San Diego finale for this Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl Production is set for Labor Day Monday, September 6th on the track between horse races at Del Mar.
Sammy Davis of Pleasanton, CA was the fastest of the 416 dogs that ran the 53-foot grass track Saturday, clocking a time of 2.75 seconds. Others in the top five include Jewels of El Cajon (2.83), Jake the Little Brown Dog of Escondido (2.85), Chile of San Diego (2.87) and Mila, also of San Diego (2.88). The slowest to advance was Truffle of Costa Mesa, who waddled across with a time of 3.16. Nearly 75% of the dogs never crossed the finish line, 26% never left the starting gate.
The winner from the showdown at Del Mar will advance to the national championship, Thursday, December 30th before the start of the nationally televised Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade presented by San Diego County Credit Union. Eight dogs from around the country will compete in the event finale.
This is the 14th year of the bowl game has staged the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals. “This event is quite a spectacle, one which we are very proud to bring to San Diego and dachshund fans,” said Bruce Binkowski, executive director of the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. “It’s amazing how popular these races have become through the years. Everyone sure seems to have a great time.”
